The Art of Preservation
When you think of what makes Baltimore County special, or imagine what sites you would show a visitor, do you think of anything built recently? Probably not. Much of the County's character and beauty—the features that make it a desirable place to live and work—are found in its historic architecture, neighborhoods and landscapes. Yet these are often marred, or even destroyed, by neglect, illegal midnight demolitions, or poorly designed new development.

Building our future on the treasures of the past relies on many things: finding historic resources in Baltimore County and documenting them; promoting the idea that historic preservation does not hinder economic development—it is economic development; advocating good preservation planning and policies; opposing bad development.

If you are tired of seeing our unique county converted into a sprawlscape that looks like everything else, join us at the Baltimore County Historical Trust.

Our Mission
The purpose of the Baltimore County Historical Trust, Inc. is to preserve historic and significant properties in Baltimore County through education, research, technical assistance and policy formulation.

The Trust is dedicated to the core belief that the preservation of the past is essential for shaping the future. It includes:

  • Cooperation among property owners, community groups, neighborhoods, not-for-profit groups, government agencies at all levels and elected officials;
  • Respect for design, craftsmanship and the importance of retaining material culture;
  • Maintenance of historic areas as central to thriving the prosperous communities and districts; and
  • Leadership and direction for preservation policy development.

Why We Need You

Despite the best efforts of BCHT, there is a constant threat to our legacy of historic structures. some stand in the way of development. Others are demolished by neglect because the owners lack either the resources or the resolve to maintain them. While the razing of Samuel Owings House, (below right) doesn't make for a pretty picture, it's important to remember how fragile our links with the past can be. The BCHT relies on your support to continue our work.
